Grade 6-8

Curriculum

To nurture and support the changes taking place in the Middle Grades, the Waldorf curriculum in Grades 6,7 and 8 transforms significantly from the earlier grades. Critical reasoning skills, accurate observation and the development of individual judgment are emphasized as each year progresses.

The following is an outline of topics as they are studied through the Grades. Each teacher assesses the needs of the class and may choose to present some material earlier or later as appropriate for each individual class.

Grade Six

 Main Lesson Subjects

Geography/History – Geography of the Americas or Europe and Africa; Troy, Rome, Crusades, Medieval Society, Arthurian legends (1400-1700).

Science – physics (sound, light and color, heat, magnetism, static electricity), minerals and geology; possibly geocentric astronomy.

Math - business math, geometry, percentages.

Math and English Skills

In addition, a class play drawn from the curriculum may be staged.

Special subjects

French, music (recorder, singing), orchestra, eurythmy, knitting on four needles, painting, woodwork (carving), physical education (team sports).

 Grade Seven

 Main Lesson Subjects

Geography/History - Geography of Europe and Africa, or the Americas (other topic in Grade 6); The Renaissance, Reformation, Age of Discovery, Age of Exploration; Arthurian legends (1400-1700-Grade 6 or 7).

Science – physics, inorganic chemistry, astronomy, physiology, nutrition; perspective drawing.

Math and English Skills

In addition, a class play drawn from the curriculum may be staged.

Special subjects

French, choir, orchestra, eurythmy, sewing, woodwork (carving, objects with moveable parts), physical education (circus arts, team sports), visual arts.

 

Grade Eight

Main Lesson Subjects

Geography/History - Geography: any parts of the world not covered in previous years, American history, Industrial Revolution to modern history.

Science – meteorology, climatology, physics, organic chemistry, physiology.

Math and English Skills

Special Grade 8 Play production.

Special subjects

French, choir, orchestra, eurythmy, handwork (machine sewn garments), woodwork (stool), physical education, visual arts.
