FACULTY 

Susan Gilman

Morning Glory Kindergarten Teacher. Susan holds a BFA from Skidmore College and an arts education teaching certification from Parsons School of Design. She completed her Waldorf teacher certification at Alkion in 2016 and joined our faculty in 2014.

Hannelore Petteys

Hannelore began her Waldorf teacher training in the Netherlands and completed her training at the Alkion Center, earning her certificate in 2019.  She is originally from the Netherlands, and has worked as a vegetable farmer on organic farms both overseas and in New York.  Hannelore joined our faculty at the Forest Kindergarten in 2019.  

Manon Sabatier (N'Dolo)

Maple Forest Kindergarten Teacher. Manon holds a master’s degree from the Université Paul Valéry, France and a certificate in Waldorf education from Sunbridge College.  She has also taught French in our high school as well as parent/child and preschool classes.  Manon joined our faculty in 2003.

Katherine Scharff

Preschool Teacher/Parent Child Teacher. Katherine reaped the rewards of a Waldorf education, having graduated from the Green Meadow Waldorf School in 1979. She holds a certificate in Waldorf early childhood education, is a Simplicity Parenting family life coach and serves as Director of the Early Childhood Education Center at Sophias Hearth. Katherine is also trained in the Pikler approach and is a registered nurse. She joined our school in 2005.

Heather Kidd

First and second grade teacher. Heather graduated from Austin College in Sherman, TX with a BA in Communication Arts and Tulane University in New Orleans, LA with and MFA in Theatrical Design. She completed her Waldorf Teacher Training in both Early Childhood and Grades Education at Waldorf Teacher Education Eugene in Oregon over a decade ago. She moved to Saratoga Springs last year, assisting in the preschool. She has taught in multiple outdoor Waldorf Early Childhood programs, has tutored Waldorf middle school curriculum, and has taken first through fifth grade at the Eugene Waldorf School.

Anca Baboi

Lower School Grade 3 Teacher. Anca received a bachelor’s degree in psychology and special education from Alexandru Ioan Cuza University in Romania and a master’s in clinical psychology from Georgia Southern University. She is working towards completing the foundations studies in anthroposophy and the teachers’ training program at the Alkion Institute and joined our faculty in 2015.

Karen Crandall

Lower School Grade 4 Teacher. Karen received a BFA from Pennsylvania State University and a master’s of science in education from Sunbridge College. Karen began her class teaching career at Waldorf Saratoga in 1992 and is currently in her third class cycle.

Sophie Ward

Lower School Grades 5 + 6 Teacher. Sophie attended the Waldorf School of Saratoga Springs from pre-school until 12th grade. After graduating high school, she attended Bennington college where she was given the opportunity to be a student teacher in Brooklyn, New York as well as in Tokyo. After graduating from Bennington, Sophie moved to Japan to teach English. She then decided to enroll in the Waldorf teacher training program at Alkion and move back to Saratoga Springs to join our school, creating a full circle!

Astrea Ravenstar

Lower School Grade 7 Teacher. Astrea holds a B.A. in Cultural Studies with an emphasis on creative writing from Empire State College. She completed her Waldorf Teacher training in 2009 from Antioch University New England and joined our faculty the same year. In 2016, Astrea graduated from the five-year Spacial Dynamics Level I training.

Scott Stewart

Movement Teacher and Director of Afterschool Sports Program.  Scott holds a B.S. in elementary education and a B.S. in physical education from Cortland College. He completed his master’s in Waldorf education at Sunbridge College. Scott joined our faculty in the autumn of 2008.

Tamara Woolsey

Lower School Aftercare Coordinator. Tamara received a Bachelor of Science degree in Health from SUNY Potsdam, where she also studied music at Crane.  She has substitute taught and assisted in our Early Childhood Program since 2018. She lives in Saratoga Springs with her husband and two children. 

Laurence Delarbre

Lower School French Teacher. Madame Delarbre is a native of France with master degrees in both international affairs and Russian language and civilization. She has taught French in public schools as well as through private lessons. 

Stephen Balmer

High School Humanities. Steve was an English teacher from 1980  to 1983 before acquiring a J.D. degree from SUNY Buffalo in 1987. He was a practitioner of law from 1987 to 1999. Steve joined our faculty in 2000 after completing his Waldorf teacher training.

Peter Benoit

Peter Benoit - High School Math Teacher. 

Peter is a graduate of Skidmore College with a B.A. in Mathematics; he has completed many additional graduate credits in mathematics up to, but not including, the doctoral dissertation. He has worked as a teacher at the Schuyler Academy, corporate consultant in publishing, aerospace metrology lab director, freelance writer and children's book author (Scholastic, Inc.). He has also worked as a tutor, with Saratoga Learning Center and privately for 40 years, mentoring and educating several hundred local students.

Paul Beasly

High School Science and Mathematics and Middle School Science.  A Sydney, Australia native and Waldorf graduate, Paul holds bachelor degrees in both engineering physics and English literature from the University of New South Wales. Paul worked for many years in the telecommunications and semiconductor industries and holds an MBA from the University of Texas.  Paul’s passion for scientific discovery and working with young people led him to become a Waldorf science teacher and he is currently in his final year of Waldorf high school teacher training with the Center for Anthroposophy. Paul joined our faculty in 2017.

Katie Hooper

Choral Music Teacher. Katie received a bachelor of music degree from Ohio Wesleyan University and also studied at The Cummington School of the Arts in western Massachusetts. She has been a Suzuki piano teacher for 26 years and has taught choral music at our school since its inception in 1981.

Sasha Tobin

Sasha Tobin studied Creative Writing at Warren Wilson College, where she focused primarily on poetry, playwriting, and Shakespearean Literature. During her studies of creative writing and literature, she spent a semester abroad in South Africa studying multiculturalism and social change. Her studies abroad and passion for social justice have led her into in-depth studies of world cultures and world literature She later studied high school humanities and grades school Waldorf education at Rudolf Steiner College and graduated in 2015.

Michael Whitney

High School Practical Arts Teacher. Michael graduated from Pratt institute in 1994 with a BA in Industrial design. He worked for many years fabricating cabinets and furniture in Brooklyn. During those years he found time to have three kids and create hundreds of one of a kind functional products using found objects. He is working towards his Waldorf training at the Alkion Center in Hawthorne Valley. Michael joined our faculty in 2014.
