Students from Pine Hill Waldorf School and Great Barrington Rudolf Steiner School joined Mr. Stewart and the 7th grade for two days of orienteering in both Spa State Park and Moreau Lake State Park last week. All of the students have been learning compass and map skills with their games/phys ed teachers this fall. Orienteering and cartography has been lauded in recent years as a lost art that is critical to bring back as reliance on GPS devices has decreased our spatial reasoning and observation skills. Spatial reasoning is important to not just finding our way around but also in laying a strong cognitive foundation for STEM success in high school and beyond.
