Sugar Calling: Wisdom From Writers

Dear WSSS Community,

What have you been listening to, reading, and watching to help you find hope? While it's important to stay informed of the news, it's also important to fill our minds and hearts with others' stories, perspectives, and wisdom. I've been enjoying listening to the podcast Sugar Calling, in which the writer Cheryl Strayed calls fellow writers over fifty (including Margaret Atwood, Judy Blume, and George Saunders) for their wisdom on how to be in the world during this chaotic time in history.

Amy Tan tells Cheryl that we don't need to handle this moment with grace, and that it's ok to be overwhelmed. George Saunders reminds her that it's important to pay close attention, so we can tell people about our experiences in the future. Judy Blume speaks about the mood-elevating and anxiety-reducing act of going for a morning walk. I've held these words in my heart this week.

I'm also looking forward to re-visiting Rebecca Solnit's book Hope in the Dark and reading Beth Pickens's book Your Art Will Save Your Life.

Be well,

Katie
